Tell us about your kids.
My daughter is 28 months old and has been vegetarian since birth.
Keeping them happy, healthy and well-fed.
Fortunately, she eats pretty much anything. I make sure I offer her lots of healthy options and lots of variety each day. She eats 3 meals plus snacks each day. She is lacto-ovo vegetarian. I also eat the same foods to set an example for her.
I faced opposition from my husband and my parents but I did the research and talked with her pediatrician to prove to them that it is safe and healthy for babies and young children to follow a vegetarian diet. She has remained in 50th percentile for weight and 75th-90th on height.
Lessons Learned
- Offer lots of variety
- Eat the same foods you feed your child to set an example
- Children will eat what they are given. Do not give in and make separate meals for them. My philosophy is that I decide what she can eat and she decides when and how much she eats. I do not worry about her not eating enough, she will eat what she is given when she is hungry.
- Talk with your children about making healthy food choices and get them involved in choosing foods and preparing meals and snacks
