Cheeseless Hummus Pizza Recipe

By Jolinda Hackett, About.com

It may seem a bit odd to make a cheeseless vegetarian pizza using hummus instead of cheese, but the flavors in this easy Mediterranean-inpsired pizza recipe really go well together. Using hummus instead of cheese makes this vegetarian pizza very low in fat, and as long as you use a vegan pizza crust, this is a vegan pizza recipe as well.

Ingredients:

  • pre-made pizza crust
  • 2/3 cup hummus
  • 1 tomato, sliced thin
  • 1/3 cup diced pepperoncini
  • 1/3 cup black olives, sliced
  • good quality olive oil or flavored olive oil
  • 3/4 tsp dried oregano, basil or mixed Italian spices
  • salt and pepper
  • crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Preparation:

Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees.

Spread the hummus on the crust, using more or less as needed, depending on the size of your pizza crust.

Add the tomatoes, pepperoncini and black olives, again using more less depending on your crust and taste.

Drizzle with olive oil and season generously with Italian spices, salt and pepper, and a dash of crushed red pepper flakes, if desired.

Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until done.
