Vegetarian Charities: Farm Animal Rescue

Of the billions of animals that are sadly destined for the slaughterhouse each year, a lucky few manage to escape certain death and find their way to live happily ever after at a farm animal sanctuary. These sanctuaries rehabilitate injured animals and are dedicated to providing them with a lifetime of care. Caring for farm animals can be costly and requires intensive manual labor on a daily basis, so donations are greatly appreciated!

  1. Ching Farm Animal Rescue and Sanctuary

Located just outside of Salt Lake City, Utah, they may not be the largest animal sanctuary, but with several barns full of rescued animals - including llamas, emus and chinchillas - the human staff certainly have their hands full! As a past volunteer, I know first hand how much hard work goes into taking care of so many animals everyday! If you're ever in the area, be sure to stop by and volunteer for a day. Ching staff also offer vegan cooking classes and are very active in their local vegetarian community. Click here to donate to Ching Farm Animal Rescue

  2. Farm Sanctuary

With one location in New York and another in California, Farm Sanctuary is perhaps the largest and well-known of all the farm animal rescuers. For young adults who wish to learn more about animal care and rescue, they also offer an internship program where individuals live on the farm and learn to take care of injured animals. I've had several friends complete this internship program and each one has told me that it revolutionized their life. Founder Gene Bauston is a well-respected leader in the vegetarian advocacy movement and often speaks at conferences, vegetarian festivals and universities. Click here to donate to Farm Sanctuary
