Top 4 Favorite Party Recipes for Kids

By Jolinda Hackett, About.com

Whether you’re five or fifty, going vegetarian doesn’t mean cutting back on fun! If you’ve got a tot with a birthday coming, consider having the kids prepare their own snacks and treats. Cooking with kids, particularly more than one, may seem daunting, but kids love getting their hands on their food! Ingredients can be prepared in advance, allowing kids to focus on adding a personal touch to their culinary masterpieces.

1. Personal Pizzas

Everyone loves pizza, especially children. Provide dough, sauce and toppings and have your kids make their own!

2. Graham cracker and pretzel “Legos”

Provide children with a variety of pretzels and graham crackers, colored frosting and dried fruit and nuts to use as decoration. Using the frosting as “glue” and the crackers and pretzels as building blocks, kids can assemble whatever their creative minds can imagine.

3. Mongolian Shish Kabobs

This simple activity for kids blends traditional shish kabob skewers with personal sauces, like a Mongolian barbeque, hence the name. Provide children with mock meat chunks, vegetables, sweet potato chunks and pineapple chunks and have them skewer like shish kabobs. After an adult grills or bakes the kabobs, kids can dip in their choice of sauces.

4. Yogurt Bar

Try this healthier version of an ice cream sundae by using soy yogurt as a base instead of ice cream. Provide fresh fruit, cookie crumbles, and small candies or dried fruits and nuts for children to mix together into their own yogurt concoction.
