Ten Minute TVP Taco Recipe
This simple recipe uses store-bought salsa and taco seasoning to make a super-quick ten-minute vegetarian taco filling from TVP. The TVP has a texture similar to shredded chicken when cooked. Wrap up your vegetarian (and vegan!) TVP in a flour tortilla or stuff it into a hard shell with lettuce, tomatoes and beans.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups TVP (textured vegetable protein)
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp olive or vegetable oil
  • 1 package taco seasoning
  • 1 red or yellow bell pepper, cut into strips
  • 1/4 cup salsa
  • flour tortillas or taco shells

Preparation:

In a large skillet, heat the water over medium heat, and add the TVP, stirring well. Allow the TVP to reconstitute for 2-3 minutes.

Add oil and soy sauce, then peppers and taco seasoning, stirring well. Allow to cook for another 3-5 minutes, stirring frequently. Mix in salsa and remove from heat.

Serve wrapped in a flour tortilla or hard taco shells. I like to eat this as is, but you could also add tomatoes, lettuce, beans and sour cream to your tacos.

Hi, I've made this 3 times and my family loves it. I add a veg bouillon cube and it transforms the recipe. My meat eating husband and children finish the whole recipe in one sitting, and ask for tacos every week. Once I forgot the bouillon and it was not very good. But I use a homemade taco seasoning recipe off the internet, and herbes de Provence in place of oregano since we have that regularly in our spice cabinet here in Brussels. YMMV. You can crumble in bouillon at the end if you are not thrilled with your results and try that.
