Whole Wheat Sugar Cookies Recipe

Whole wheat sugar cookies with whole wheat flour

Want to try a homemade cookie recipe made with whole wheat flour? These simple sugar cookies are made with whole wheat flour instead of regular flour but are still sweet - just like sugar cookies should be!

  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons lowfat milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange peel
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons sugar


In a medium bowl, using an electric mixer, cream together sugar and butter until fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add egg, low-fat milk, extracts and mix well.

Blend together flour, baking powder, soda, salt, nutmeg and orange peel. Add to egg mixture and continue to mix until well blended.

Shape dough into balls, using about 2 teaspoons each. Roll in granulated sugar. Place about 2 inches apart on cookie sheet coated with cooking spray. Flatten cookie slightly.

Bake in a preheated 375 degree oven for 9 to 10 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on pan for 2 minutes and transfer to wire rack.

Yields 3 dozen healthy whole wheat sugar cookies.
