Sugar- free Vegan Apple Cinnamon Crisp Recipe

By Jolinda Hackett, About.com

Apple crisp, spiced with cinnamon and just a dash of nutmeg makes for an indulgent vegetarian and vegan breakfast or a healthy dessert. This sugar-free recipe uses chopped dates for a bit of sweetness, instead of sugar. For an extra treat, serve this easy apple crisp recipe with ice cream, or vegan non-dairy ice cream for a vegan dessert. To make sure that this recipe is truly sugar-free, make sure your granola doesn't have any added sugar, or use a homemade sugar-free granola.

Ingredients:

  • 5 - 6 large apples
  • 6 large dates, diced
  • approx 1/3 cup water
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 cup granola
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 cup vegan margarine

Preparation:

Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees.

Peel the apples, if desired, and slice into thin pieces.

In a small bowl, soak the diced dates in water for about 10 minutes, or until soft.

Spread the apples in a baking pan or casserole dish. Cover with the granola mixture, then sprinkle with the dates.

Bake for 15 - 20 minutes.
