Basic Homemade Granola Recipe

Basic Homemade Granola Recipe

Homemade granola with raisins and chopped dried apricots

A basic and easy recipe for homemade granola made with rolled oats, wheat flakes cereal, and dried fruits and nuts of your choice. With just honey to sweeten it and help everything stick together, this is a refined sugar-free recipe you can eat knowing it's good for your health. And yes, many many store-bought brands of granola really do contain sugar. And lots of it. Make your own!

  • 4 cups of rolled oats
  • 1 cup wheat germ
  • 1 cup wheat flakes cereal
  • 1 cup chopped nuts, any kind
  • 1/2 cup coconut
  • 1/2 cup raisins or dried cranberries
  • 1/2 cup dried apricots (or other dried fruit), chopped small
  • 1/2 cup canola or safflower oil
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup coconut
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Pre-heat oven to 350 degees.

Combine the wheat germ, the wheat flakes cereal, nuts and coconut in a large bowl.

Heat the oil over low heat stove top and add the honey and vanilla, stirring to combine. Heat just until honey has melted and ingredients are well combined.

Combine the honey and oil mixture with the dry ingredients, stirring with a wooden spoon to combine well.

Once the ingredients are combined, transfer the granola to a shallow baking pan and place in the oven for 10 minutes.

After ten minutes, remove the pan from the oven, and gently toss the granola to mix it up. Return to the oven for another 5 minutes. Remove from oven and add the raisins and apricots or other dried fruit while granola is still warm. Enjoy your homemade granola!
