Homemade baked beans recipes are usually prepared with maple sugar or molasses (or both), and so have little refined sugar in them. Despite their name, baked beans don't always need to be baked in the oven. They can be cooked stove top, baked on a hot covered grill, and, vegetarian and vegan baked beans work particularly well in a crockpot or slow cooker.
