Vegetarian company gives back

Although I often talk about my favorite foods, and sometimes causes, I rarely rave about particular brands or products (and no, I don't receive any compensation from the companies when I do). Today, however, I want to give a shout-out though to a vegetarian company, Lightlife, that has quietly, for the past 30 years been donating 5% of it's profits to support various charities and worthwhile initiatives. As if the fact that they've been a vegetarian company for more than 30 years - that's even longer than I've been vegetarian - wasn't impressive enough! Lightlife is the company behind several popular vegetarian meat substitutes, including vegetarian bacon (pictured),GimmeLean sausage and "ground beef" crumbles, vegetarian pepperoni and tempeh.

When I found out that donating 5% of profits has been a corporate practice at Lightlife ever since day one, I asked them to tell me more. They responded:

Giving back is one of today's corporate "hot buttons." But at Lightlife, it's hardly a trendy thing to do. For us, it's been a way of life ever since we opened our doors over 30 years ago. Every year since our beginning, we've given back at least 5% of net profits to charities that support causes of human dignity, the environment and good health. This year, Lightlife donated $150,000 to Urban Farming to support its mission to end hunger, empower people and encourage healthier eating through sustainable residential and community gardens.
What a great example! Lightlife shows that if people really care, small to medium companies, and even start-ups can afford to make responsible corporate practices a way of life. Congrats, Lightlife!
