Ah, summer. The time of fresh seasonal fruits, barefoot outdoor eating, icy lemonade and oodles of wonderful moments that will be the future's nostalgic memories. And nothing says summer like fresh juicy watermelon. But wait, according to Oklahoma, watermelon is actually a vegetable. Or both a vegetable and a fruit, apparently. Something about how it's related to cucumbers. I don't know.
So, how do you enjoy this classic summer, uh, vegetable treat? Once you've finished lugging that 20-pound weight home from the grocery store or farm stand, what do you do with it? (Hint, the child pictured at right has one idea!). Learn how to pick, open, slice, cube or ball a watermelon in this timely watermelon video and see it done right.
Don't throw away those rinds, either! You can use them to make old-fashioned southern pickled watermelon rinds or a watermelon rind pie. Um, yum?
