Subway's new vegetarian falafel sandwich

Having lived in both Chicago and San Francisco, I can't really complain about lack of vegan food options, though having gone vegetarian over two decades ago, I can say that I've seen a lot of changes. But not everyone lives in the big city, and even for those that do, options can be limited while traveling. However we may feel about large corporations versus small independent businesses, there's no doubt that large chain restaurants have a lot of bargaining power.

First there was the Burger King Veggie Burger. Then KFC Canada introduced the vegetarian chicken sandwich. Now, Subway in Canada (BC and Alberta only, for now) is offering a vegan falafel option. How great is that? The vegan falafel has long been on the menu in Chicago, and is specifically marketed towards vegetarians.

I've long dreamt of the day that Subway offers vegan mayonnaise and soy cheese (really, how hard can it be?), so maybe that dream is just a little bit closer to reality today. And all I have to do is move to Canada.

Canadians (or travelers!), have you tried the vegan falafel patty at Subway? What do you think? Ask them to send us Yanks some, will ya?

So how do we get these vegan options in the USA? More specifically in NJ, the Garden State???

And how can we get Dunkin Donuts to carry Soy milk? What’s the big deal? I’ve written them a number of times about it and have never gotten a “real” response.

Subway food is reprehensibly terrible. The very few times I have tried Subway, I have always been disappointed big time. Even their ‘baked’ bread is nothing but soft tasteless dough that adds nothing to the sandwich except lots of filler, calories and carbs.

My advice: Steer clear of Subway. You can do much better elsewhere.

Now if they would make this on a gluten free bun with an egg free mayo they would have a real winner. Might even boost their sales. As it is I can not eat at any fast food.

@ Journaler- There are already 224 options in New Jersey, I am happy to say. Visit http://www.happycow.net and click on USA then choose New Jersey to see all of the vegetarian and vegan restaurants and stores as well as vegan/vegetarian options at other restaurants.

This site is free and offers info on all 50 states, Europe, Asia, etc so is excellent for those who are traveling.

Journaler, I can sympathize! Vegetarian/vegan restaurants are closing left and right in NJ, and I can’t drive 40 minutes each way whenever I want to eat out. I wish NJ had better vegan restaurant options!

I’ve eaten quite a few Veggie Delight subs at Subway over the years, but it would be great to have a falafel option!

The problem with subway that they don’t mention isn’t the fat or even the calorie content of thier food, it’s the SODIUM content that’ll kill ya! Even the best of their six inchers has an adults full days sodium allowance in it…eat one and no more sodium for the day allowed. Geez….stroke city!

Bob –

Every time I’ve been in a Subway, they actually have the nutritional information posted quite clearly and legibly. I also appreciate that the list the nutritional information with just the basics and with condiments too.

Wish all restaurants would do the same! I wonder if this is a state-by-state thing, though – maybe they don’t do it where you live?

The Subway in Ontario has a veggie patty and wow is it good! However the last time I went, I think they’ve changed the patty and I don’t like it quite as much, but am still happy they have something. I also make sure to go to the one Subway because the guy that manages it always uses different gloves to make my veggie patty sub. They haven’t at other places.
When we took a trip to San Francisco I was actually surprised to see that there was no veggie patty so I had to just get the veggie delight.
I’d love to also have the falafel sub here, so I can actually choose between two things. lol

I think ALL of us, vegetarians AND vegans MUST accept the fact that we are NOT the ‘normal’ consumers of fast food/restaurant fare :( The chains are geared toward their TYPICAL customers. I believe as a group, we tend to be more health conscious than average Americans. THUS, we should appreciate the options that become available to us :) I admit, I TIRE, of baked potato and salad at a restaurant :( I eat VERY little ‘fast food’. Too high in sodium, fat and ‘OTHER’ ingredients. Fact is THIS-Fast food restaurants cannot AFFORD to cater to us :( Products wouldn’t SELL and they would lose money. They are in business to MAKE MONEY… I have NO problem with that. I am in business to MAKE MONEY too :) I believe it is ALOT better than 20 years ago. I hold out……….HIGH HOPES for the future :)

(11) SUBWAY Falafel says:

Dear Veggie & Falafel Lovers,
Thank you all for the comments and feedback! We are very happy to hear that everyone is excited that SUBWAY Restaurants (currently in Chicagoland) are offering the Falafel-icious Sandwich. SUBWAY is committed to offering more Vegan and Vegetarian options to the menu. We are testing this sandwich in the Chicago market first with plans to grow to other markets soon…..with your continued support, hopefully sooner than later :)
We are working on bringing hummus to the menu which will make this Falafel Sandwich totally irresistible. At this point we can tell you that we are working very hard on it…we promise. Just as an FYI, the wraps, the Hearty Italian, Honey Oat, Italian, Roasted Garlic, Sourdough, and the 9-Grain breads are VEGAN! Also, the current recommended sauce for the Falafel Sandwich is the Zesty Cucumber Sauce…i must say, it’s mmm…..delicious.

My guess is, that culturally, depending where you live may help negate the introduction of the vegetarian line of food offerings…..for instance > IF you are Moslem &/or Middle Eastern,,,,,people there may get the vegetarian menu quicker than elsewhere….

Just sayin……..

(13) Vegetarian says:

@LKC Yes, I believe that in Chicago, this was influenced by a Middle Eastern restaurant owner and his customers. Plus, there’s a TON of vegetarians in Chicago – of all ethnicities and religions. I love Chicago! Have you tried asking for it, LKC? Or the new vegan subs I just posted about too?
