Shopping the Bulk Bins

Friday January 16, 2009
If the numbers in your bankbook are getting smaller and smaller, it's not easy to make healthy eating a priority. Prices at your local health food store can seem outrageous compared how far your dollar goes at warehouse wholesalers like Costco, Winco or Smart and Final. But healthy deals abound in natural food stores - if you know where to look. I'm talking about the bulk bins! Forego the temptation to purchase expensive nuts and candies from the bulk bins, and stock up on staples such as whole grains, beans, spices and mixes. Need another reason to shop the bulk bins? There's zero packaging! If you bring your own recycled or reused bags, that is. The bulk bins are an environmentalist's dream! Here are my favorite foods to buy in bulk.

Spices are the best. I can get arrowroot powder in a jar for $4 or get twice as much from the bulk bin for 40 cents. It’s great to help replace egg in baking. Spike is also pretty cheap.

Wow – I’ve never seen Spike in bulk – where do you find that? Yeah, spices are great to buy in bulk. Dried herbs too – make your own tea blend!
