For Foodies: The Vegetarian Hundred
I selected foods, dishes and ingredients that have such a strong and unique flavor or cultural significance that they really stand out in the food world. I included exotic fruits and regional dishes, some of which are incredibly rare outside of their homeland, as well as a few standard vegetarian favorites, and some dishes with a small but dedicated "cult following". I’m not particularly a gourmand, so I’m sure I’ve selected some foods that would have true foodies snorting their noses in superiority. So, with reverence to the food blogger who created the list, and in agreement with several of the original list items, here’s my Vegetarian Hundred.
What would you add to this list? How many have you had? The Vegetarian 100 has an added twist, so no one can possibly have had all 100, but if anyone has had 99 of them, I salute you! I’ve had 85.
Just for fun, if you have a blog too, copy and paste the list, then bold the one’s you’ve tried and link to your blog in the comments section below. Have fun!

Hi, Jolinda:
Wowza, impressive list. I’ve had MANY of the items on the list. And not tasted others, such as 74, 84, and others. And #8 (huckleberries) sound good.
Will try and write something on my veg blog this week. Have a great weekend.
Missy.
Reading this again is making me hungry!
Wow, I never realized poutine was known outside Canada…. a vegan poutine in Brooklyn???
Yup. Food Swings in Brooklyn, known as a “vegan junk food” restaurant has it on the menu – or at least did last time I was there. I first tried poutine in Montreal and was hooked from the first bite! Apparently there is a place in Montreal that serves a vegan version as well. Love it, love it love it!!!
Thanks for a great list just for us! It’s going on my blog tomorrow (with a link back to you of course). I will probably steer clear of Mickey D’s veg burger, though–on principle. I had nutritional yeast on some popcorn just last night. Yum.
Love getting your email updates!
Ah, nutritional yeast. I dream of the day when movies theaters across the globe will offer you nutritional yeast to sprinkle on your popcorn….I only know of one so far that does this.
I’m not vegetarian, but I like to sample a variety of foods. I’ve enjoyed 42 on the list so far, maybe 43 if you count DRIED persimmons … I’m actively looking to get my hands on a fresh one! I don’t think #23 is a good choice for a list like this, and you missed fresh figs! But some of the others bear further investigating …. thanks for the links!
I am not a vegetarian right now but do try to eat that way as much as possible so I thought this list was pretty cool.
Wow – dried persimmons – that sounds yummy! I’ll have to try some. Never even seen them before!
Wow, cool list! That vegan caviar merits further investigation. What’s it made of?
The most interesting thing by far is the garlic ice cream. Sounds sick! lol But I’d love to try it, if there was a way to make it vegan. What are the eggs in the ice cream used for?
Mamajuice – I actually thought about including fresh figs. Maybe it would have been number 101!
Mira – you can find out more about vegetarian caviar by clicking the link!
