Update: Vegetarian Chicken has arrived at KFC - and it tastes great!

Thursday July 24, 2008
Edit: If you're headed off to KFC to try the new vegetarian "chicken" sandwich, why not bring a friend and buy two? Peta2 is offering a "buy one get one free" coupon on their website here:

The verdict is in! While it may not be good for your body, it's a consensus that the new vegetarian "chicken" available at KFC restaurants in Canada are great for your tastebuds - and taste just like real chicken! Although the bun it comes with contains some trace dairy products and it's usually served with mayonnaise, vegans can ask for no mayo and get it in a wrap rather than on a bun for a fully vegan version. KFC, if you're reading this, the rest of the world would love to try these new menu items too! Lucky Canada! Here's what some of you Canadians have had to say about the new vegetarian "chicken" at KFC Canada:

"Just got home from KFC here in Toronto, and devoured two of these babies in about 5 minutes. They’re really really good, surprisingly. Tastes exactly like the KFC chicken sandwiches that I remember eating many years ago. A little heavy on the mayo though, but c’est la vie."

"I had the veg chicken burger today, it was really good. I actually couldn't believe that it wasn't chicken."

"I tried it last night. Yes I’m sure it’s terrible (for your health), and yes it’s probably fried with the real chicken, but it was so so delicious."

"I had the veggie chicken sandwich today and it was SO good! It brought back memories of eating KFC many many years ago before I became vegetarian. The taste was exactly how I remembered. I’m sure it’s not good for you…but it sure tasted good!"

The main concern amongst us vegetarians seems to be whether or not these vegetarian "chicken" sandwiches are prepared alongside the regular chicken and are thus coated in real chicken grease or oil. Can any of you lucky Canadians find out how the vegan chicken is being prepared and let us all know?

I think it is important to support the changes KFC has made to their menu. It is such a huge step for this company to acknowlege that there is in fact a demand for vegan and vegetarian offerings at fast food restaurants. I know of all the fast food chains, KFC is one of the worst, however, this one action opens the door for many more compromises between them and “us” in the future.

Yes, I do agree that the KFC Veggie “chicken” sandwich tastes pretty good. I had my first yesterday in Vancouver, Canada. However, I also found out that the Veggie “chicken” is fried in the same oil as the real chicken. That’s not acceptable to vegetarians. I guess maybe PETA forgot to address that part in their deal with KFC.

I tried it the other day and thought it was alright. It tasted pretty similar to the Schneiders veggie chicken patties but a little spicier and deep fried. It definitely looked like they were cooking it in the same oil as they cook the chicken.

In regards to the veggie chicken being fried with the regular chicken, my friend Pulin at Peta2 makes a good point on his blog: “We understand that many people find the idea of consuming even trace amounts of animal products to be gross, but our primary focus is on preventing harm to animals. Eating something that has been cooked in the same oil in which chicken flesh has also been cooked doesn’t cause any harm to animals—and deciding not to get that sandwich won’t prevent the chicken from being ordered, cooked, and eaten anyway.” Good point!!! Thanks Pulin!

Johm – These things take time too, don’t forget. Using the BK Veggie as an historical example – when it first came out, it was grilled along with the meat items, but you could request to have in microwaved. After a year or so, it became company policy at all locations to microwave it.

I’ve been looking a lot online about these KFC Burgers and on many of the sites I go to I notice so many people saying in the forums “No, I will not try the KFC Vegetarian Sandwich, I will never support a restaurant that promotes cruelty to animals, It doesn’t change that KFC slaughters chickens etc..” But these people don’t seem to realize that while maybe your money is still going to KFC, the only way that vegetarianism is going to work, and people are going to notice that its time to change the way animals are treated is if we actively support the companies that do realize this. So maybe KFC didn’t willingly take on a vegetarian options menu and maybe your money will still be going into the same pockets as the chicken farmers, but at least when a place as popular as KFC realizes that vegetarianism is popular and veggie options sell… the rest of the world will follow. Sorry for my rant.. just something I thought neeeded to be pointed out.

KFC not only slaughters chickens, they have one of the worse records for cruelty on the raising of the birds. They are cramped in small cages, stacked on top of each other, never seeing the light of day. they are so stressed that they peck at each other and have been known to canabalize each other. Their beaks have been burned off to minimize the damage. Male chicks are “disposed of” shortly after hatching as they do not develope as much breast meat or lay eggs. They are dumped in large barrels and left to die. Look it up.

Well I actually know someone that works at KFC and yes they are fried in the same grease…. I personally am a vegetarian by health first (Saturated fat issues) but have always desired being a vegetarian so I could eat meat still but choose not to…. Choosing not to eat meat I chose not to eat the reminites (sorry can’t spell) of any animal. The girl I know said they can grill them and that could make them veggie but they won’t do it if you asked. Anyways my one question to KFC is its one thing to call it vegetarian and let people make their own decisions but I know a few vegan come on how would they eat that…. to publicize it that way is just ridiculous…. Sorry for my rant and I do get your point Vegetarian about not worrying about the aftermath of animals but me myself I haven’t eaten at KFC even when I did eat meat… If they could make it not contaminated I would probably eat it everyday…. But intill then I guess my mouth will still drool on the smell…..

Getting vegetarian food from a place that sells fried chicken is like trying to get religion in a whorehouse. Read this: http://consumerist.com/5027777/kfcs-vegetarian-sandwich-isnt-stop-kidding-yourself-that-fast-food-restaurants-have-vegetarian-options

Certainly a valid point, “Unanimous”. Though, to be trite (and hopefully not offensive with the analogy), didn’t Jesus say something or other about bringing religion to the prostitutes rather than scorning them? Similarly, big business deserves a pat on the back when it does something right. Positive reinforcement. Hopefully it catches on.
