Updates on Oprah's 21-Day Vegan Experiment

Saturday June 7, 2008
So, how's she doing? By now, Oprah has been vegan, gluten-free and alcohol-free for about 14 days, and it seems like she's been doing quite well overall! On day nine, her chef prepared a vegetarian "tuna" sandwich on gluten-free bread with lots of veggies. Oprah wrote of this vegan meal:

It filled me up and was so satisfying. I've had no cravings or food issues—I'm in harmony with life.

Wow! Sounds great Oprah! I hope you keep going well-beyong your 21-day goal! The one thing she seems to be missing is an occasional drink or glass of wine. And, although it's not permitted on her specific cleanse-diet, Oprah's nutritionist advises readers to have a glass of wine and enjoy it! Everything in moderation, I suppose.

Yes, it would be easy if we all had a chef like Oprah does! I heard about this diet she is trying. What was the book???

The cost of grocercies is going up to where it is a hardship for some to eat well. Eating organic & vegan with “fresh foods” is even more expensive. I would LOVE to shop only @ framer’s markets & Whole Foods, Wild Oats, etc. By the time I drive to these places with gas @ $4 a gal, this tuna sandwich recipe will cost me about $25! What can the average person do to eat healthier within a budget???

There is no medical benefit to alcohol. Drink grape juice if you want benefits. Oprah’s nutritionist may be using out of date information from the 1980’s rand study. Dutch data finds that wine consumption is only correlated with lower cardio disease because of the highe socioeconomic status of wine drinkers. Plus, is wine really vegan?

I admire Oprah’s vegan experiment. As a part-time vegan — one poster remarked it is sometimes too difficult without a chef to do it right — I find that living without animal products makes me feel amazing.

It’s not the weight thing — though you do lose weight. (and chocolate is not vegan unless it is labeled so). It’s a health thing. It’s also doing something wonderful for the Earth — eating so low on the food chain.

I’ve been on Oprah’s show and she was not the warmest host I’ve worked with. I’m being kind her. So I wonder if her food habits had an effect on her bad attitude. Maybe Oprah should stay vegan and be friendly on camera and off!

I would like to know what brand of gluten-free bread she is using. My mom is on a wheat-free, gluten-free diet and hasn’t found a bread that she likes and misses it. she does enjoy the rice pasta

Try Trader Joe’s. They have a great gluten-free rice bread, and a nice selection of gluten-free products, i.e., brownies, as well.

Vegetarianism is a way of life not actually meant for experimentation.
One has to live it to actually experince its numerous benefits. Its naturees way and must be lived . It becomes inexpensive outside of the “experiment”

Just wanted to say that I’m certainly no chef, and while cooking vegan may sound difficult at first, once you get used to it it’s very simple and satisfying. I think that in our society we don’t really think outside of the standard american diet. So when we think about cooking without meat, eggs, dairy, or other animal products, the idea is scary. For me it was a matter of starting a new pantry with vegan staples and more spices. Then I started finding and trying recipes, I read vegan food blogs, got some cookbooks, and eventually built up a whole new recipe box. It may take some time to feel comfortable, just because it’s so different from the standard diet, but it does become easy.
I guess my point is: don’t give up if you think you need a chef to be vegan, it gets easy with practice!
