What are you drinking for breakfast?

Monday March 24, 2008
Coffee is steadily slipping as the favorite breakfast beverage amongst Americans. So, what has it been replaced by? Green tea? Chai lattes? Water or orange juice? None of the above. New consumer research published in the Seattle Times shows that the most popular breakfast drink choice is soda. I don't think it's particularly newsworthy to point out that Americans love their sugary soft drinks, but this is breakfast we're talking about! News like this is a bit disheartening when we hear so much about kids who think French fries are a vegetable, because it certainly seems like American adults aren't setting much of a healthy example! So, if you're drinking something less than nutritious for breakfast, I encourage you to try some of these naturally sweet smoothie recipes instead. Sure, they take a couple minutes to make, as opposed to just popping the tab off the soda can, but your health will thank you! News link: Soda Growing as Breakfast Drink

Yes, a lot of people drink soda in the morning because that’s how they get their caffeine fix. I prefer soda to coffee because I like to drink something cold in the morning, it tastes better and it has caffeine without making me jittery like coffee. That being said, obviously it is not healthy and I don’t do it often. But if I need some caffeine, I’m reaching for soda.

Soda?
EW- sorry that just sounds gross to me but then again, I don’t really drink soda ever.
Thanks for the new cool fact!

I admit I’m not innocent myself- I do like to have an iced coffee in the mornings, but I try to make it a “treat” rather than an addiction.

I would rather drink cold tea than soda. I have been substituting coffee for homemade iced teas.
If adults have bad habits and diets, we are going to continue to see unhealthy children who will turn into unhealthier adults.

that’s disturbing but the article is like archaic written in january of 2007… although i do believe that this article is as true today as it was a year ago… do you have a newer survey?

I start my family morning off each day with a homemade smoothie with a vegan multiple vitamin powder form blended right in. I have been doing this for quite some time and I have to say it does give me energy for the day.

Oooh! VeganMom, what brand of powder do you use? I’ve never heard of a vegan vitamin powder? Does it contain B12? What a great idea!

Much as I do love my iced coffee, lately I’ve been drinking a miso broth tea as substitute when I feel like I need something to sip. I add some diced fresh chilies as well for flavor and an extra “pick me up”. Fresh chilies in the monrning - if that doesn’t wake you up, nothing will!
