Are you "vegansexual"?

Friday August 3, 2007
Ooh boy, this is bound to stir up some controversy! A new study out of New Zealand (I hope nobody's tax dollars were spent on this!) which polled 157 vegans - mostly female - found that they prefer to have sex with other vegans. The logical conclusion to this is, of course, to make up a new word! Vegansexuals: vegans who only have sex with other vegans. Hmmm, I don't think Webster will be adding this to the dictionary anytime soon, and rightfully so - this really isn't newsworthy stuff, and I'm really wondering why so many news agencies are covering it. Then again, its not surprising that sex sells, but who knew that sex, mixed with food would sell?

While we're at it, I'd also like to object to the article writer's comment that vegans are "notoriously finicky eaters". Al contrare, I personally am one of the least picky eaters I know. I'll eat just about anything, so long as it's vegan!

The bottom line, in my opinion, with this and many studies is that while it may be fascinating food for thought, a survey of 157 self-selected respondents does not make scientific fact. I've said it before and I'll say it again: more research is needed.

So, what do you think? Are you "vegansexual"?

Well that was better than the last article I read on this at least. (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=472433&in_page_id=1770)
They really seem to have a nack for making us sound like a bunch of nutters.
As for the question though, I have no problem fooling around with someone who isn’t veg but I definitely wouldn’t want a serious relationship with someone who doesn’t share my beliefs. I can’t imagine living with someone and waking up every morning to have breakfast next to someone with a big plate of bacon.

Well that explains it. I knew since the day I was born I was somehow different. I thought it ‘coz’ I was attracted to the same sex. But NOW l KNOW what it is..I’m a…a….a VEGANSEXUAL. Wait ’til l tell mum and dad…..

“They really seem to have a nack for making us sound like a bunch of nutters.” Agreed. The world loves a “crazy vegans” story almost as much as it loves sex stories, it seems. They make it seem like veggies walk around holding their noses all day long or wearing little hospital masks to filter out the carnivore stench…..

How true! How true!
Having a good laugh over the above comments.

Well… one thing I’m sure vegans might notice is that non-vegans and those who eat really unhealthy diets tend to have… well… a certain odor when you your up close and personal. Sorry folks. Its true. If you eat the same you don’t notice it. But when it comes to certain activities…. there is a HUGE difference in a variety of ways I won’t go into. Eat a highly toxic diet…. and it shows up in lots of ways… including smells.

(6) Frank Language says:

Naturally, as a vegan I prefer partners who don’t have dairy and meat oozing out of their pores; the reason vegans taste and smell better is animal products contain an abundance of sulfur-based amino acids.

I am fortunate to have found a partner who’s also vegan–albeit 500 miles away. We do what we can.

(7) Vegirl says:

My main concern is not if non-vegans think I’m a nutter, or that I make “us” all look like nutters, It’s this:

I only consider partners who are on my same ethical and intellectual playing field. If you think it’s ok to use and abuse animals for what you wrongly perceive to be your own gain, you don’t come anywhere close to my compassion standards.

What are your strongest beliefs? Do you believe it’s immoral to molest and exploit little children? Would you date someone who did? Well we believe it’s also not ok to molest and exploit other animals. It’s a very significant value that affects the entire way we live and see thw world, so it’s not easy to date people who have no comprehension of it. We want to be in the same world as our partners.

You’re just going to have to get over it; some of us don’t want to date people who are engaged in (including financially supporting) exploiting other sentient beings. What’s it to you? Don’t date us.

Our lifestyles are too different.

Yeah- I am a vegansexual. I didn’t choose to be one. -It just kind of happened to me when I changed my diet, and then broke up with my Boyfriend. The guy I dated at the time was a vegetarian too. Once that relationship ended, I couldn’t stomach kissing a meat eater. As a result, I have been alone for 2 years. I just started a blog about my non-sexual life at urbanvegansexual@blogspot.com – check it out! Hey, would you like to exchange blog links?

(10) Urban Vegansexual says:

I am vegansexual and proud of it. It just kinda happened as my eating habits changed. Well, I will cuddle with a meat eater, but he has no chance of “scoring”. Yes, you heard it, I went geen with my Va-jay-jay. As a result, I am lonely and have not touched a man in years. There are a lot of lonely nights and empty conversation. I see meat eating men as Mr. Right Now, not Mr. Right.
Visit me at http://www.urbanvegansexual.blogspot.com and give some advice PLEASE !

Vegansexual?! Oh god another label! I personally wouldn’t want to sleep with anyone that doesn’t have compassion for animals so I guess I’m a ‘vegansexual’!

The writer for that article is so pathetic. Vegans are not finiky eaters because we do not want to eat poisons and cruelty.

(12) Lindsay says:

I want to be a vegansexual.
However, I need to become a vegan first.
The only animal products in my current diet is plain yogurt, which I love with honey, and small amounts of cheese.
These are the hardest two things for me to get out of my diet. Baked goods and bread with eggs and milk was no problem, cheese and yogurt though are. I am working on it.

I can totally see where you guys are coming from. I would never date a meat eater.
Give it a year or so and I should be a full-class vegansexual.

(13) Matt says:

Vegans rule. Ok, my brother (I call him a Meagan – only seems to eat meat) is THE MOST finicky eater ever. In fact, most non-vegans have a much more restricted diet – they have a few veggies they will eat, and then just cow, pig or chicken. Who’s finicky??

P.S. Vegansexual for sure – but like many posters, due to ethical, intellectual and environmental attractiveness to others who are like minded (my wife and I are both vegans).

(14) Jordan says:

Not surprising considering anyone who is vegan probably cares a lot a health, the environment and animals. If you cared a lot about those things wouldn’t you want to be sleeping with someone who also cares about the same things? I bet if you polled those people they’d prefer to be friends with other vegans too.

(15) Sean says:

And here I thought “vegansexual” was just another name for “lesbian.” Vegansexual…so if you refuse to put meat in your mouth, and so does your partner, does that mean no oral? Or is your foreplay just a lot of salad tossing? Give me carnivore chick any day.

(16) vegan says:

I’m a vegan and sometimes I miss meat so I sleep with carnivorous girls to get my meat and dairy fix via osmosis. soooo good.
