Vegetarianism and Global Warming

Thursday April 19, 2007
With all the talk about global warming in the news lately, this Earth Day, April 22, is a great time to reflect on how the choices that we make and the lifestyles that we lead will affect future generations living on this planet. Though many people realize that avoing red meat and eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables is the best diet for personal health, few realize that this is the best diet for planetary health as well.

Did you know, for example, that switching to a vegetarian diet can do more to reduce your carbon emissions than switching to a hybrind car? How, exactly, does meat consumption affect the environment? You'll find the answers, complete with statistics and reliable resources here. Read on to learn about the relationship between our food choices and fossil fuels, rainforest depletion and ocean pollution.

Other things to consider when evaluating the impact of your diet on the planet:

  • Was the food grown locally or was it transported hundreds or even thousands of miles?
  • The packaging of the food - fresh fruits and vegetables and bulk bin items need no packaging!
Happy Earth Day everyone!

(1) Andrew Feldman says:

Being a 12 year old vegan i agree with the global warming issue. Why aren’t the connection between food and global warming taught in school. Wouldn’t it make sense to teach the children, or the future adults to make smarter food choices. Who else but us will be here for the effects. We are the generation that will be most affected.
