In the News: New York Considers Banning Trans Fats
On Tuesday, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygeine proposed drastically limiting the amount of trans fats restaurants would be allowed to serve. Though the proposed near-ban would not effect foods sold in grocery stores, nutritionists claim that most trans fats consumed by Americans come in the form of food eaten away from the home, and many are hailing this as an important first step in curbing America's increasing health problems. Some companies and restaurants are already taking voluntary steps to reduce the amount of trans fats in their products (though KFC was sued recently over the dangerous amount of undisclosed trans fat contained in its meals).
Not even us veggies are exempt from this health problem! Trans fats permeate many processed and baked foods. Yes, even vegan foods.
