Exotic Vegetarian Ingredients
Veggie burgers and mock chicken nuggets are common items in grocery stores these days, and you'll find fake beef and even duck at many Chinese restaurants, but what are some of the other, more exotic substitutes available for the adventurous vegetarian gourmand?
Someone somewhere makes a substitute for just about everything you could possbly imagine, and due to the magic of world-wide shipping and the internet, you can have it delivered straight to your door. Here's a few of the most interesting picks I've found:
Vegan Caviar (pictured)
Caviar, unfertilized fish eggs, once an expensive delicacy, is now available in an environmentally-friendly moderately-priced vegan version and looks and tastes so much like the real thing, chances are no one will know.
Vegetarian Haggis
Just in case this is one of those things that you miss as a vegetarian, you can buy haggis, a traditional Scottish dish made from scraps of meat and boiled with oatmeal and spices, in a can online.
Vegetarian Shrimp
These organic vegetarian shrimp are each individually shaped and colored to look, smell, and taste like the real thing and will fill your kitchen with that seafood smell. You can often find these on the menu at vegetarian Chinese restaurants.

Hi! No, its not a prank, the store owners of Food Fight Grocery that I linked to just have a sense of humor. I’ve been to their grocery store and can vouch that while they do, in fact, sell vegan caviar, they do not sell cocaine, cruelty-free or otherwise!

I’ve tried the vegetarian shrimp. I HEART them. I especially love making a “creme” sauce with silken tofu and pouring it and the shrimp over pasta.
You know, it’s jut one of those things, I guess. I took one bite of the veggie shrimp and that was it – I couldn’t stand it. But 2 of my veg friends love it to pieces and will hunt it down wherever it is to be found.
