Chinese-style Stir Fry with Seitan and Hoisin Sauce

Monday March 20, 2006
I hope you've been having as much fun experimenting with seitan lately as I have! Of course, one of the best ways to prepare seitan is in a simple stir fry. This Chinese-style stir fry recipe with hoisin sauce is just a little bit sweet and just a little bit spicy. Look for hoisin sauce in Asian markets or next to the soy sauce in well-stocked grocery stores.

Beware vegans - hoisin sauce is made with seafood. In fact, that’s what hoisin (Mandarin: Hai3xian1, 海鲜) sauce means - seafood! You might be able to find a vegan substitute, but unlikely.

Hi Jeff- On the contrary, I’ve never even seen a hoisin sauce that wasn’t vegan!

The listed ingredients are usually something along the lines of fermented soy, vinegar, garlic, sometimes a fruit sweetener or sweet potatoes, and peppers.

Of course, its always a good idea to read labels, but maybe you are thinking of another kind of sauce and not hoisin sauce? Could you tell me what you are basing this on?
